The seeds are separated from the grapes, washed, sun dried, and cold stabilized at 35 degrees Farenheit for 3 months before we package them up for sale. The grapes that these seeds were harvested from are used to make our award winning estate Clarion Chardonnay at Bacus Vineyards in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDuring grapevine domestication some 11,000 years ago, when Vitis Vinifera was cultivated and adapted for wine making, individuals vines were chosen that had favorable, albeit rare genetic recombination events, that led to hermaphroditism.  Wild grapevines are dioecious, which means male and female flowers are located on separate plants. Male individuals bear flowers with reduced pistils and female vines have flowers with reflexed anthers and stamens that produce sterile pollen grains. The Vitis Vinifera seeds we are offering produce vines that have perfect flowers with both functional pistils and stamens so they will self pollinate and always yield fruit. In fact, they may yield too much fruit and care should be taken to reduce yields to improve fruit quality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe grapevine was probably the first fruit crop domesticated by humans, some estimates put the date of domestication as far back as 15,000 years ago, well in advance of the development of agriculture.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eChardonnay is a classic white wine grape, whose name means \"a place of thistles\" in Latin, and traces its heritage to the Middle Ages and a small village of the same name in the Maĉon region of France. Clones are the result of years of selection for desired traits and are propagated vegetatively, often by cuttings from original mother vine. Desired traits are fruit compactness, cluster size, vigor, winter hardiness, fruit composition or timing of the ripening. The 95 and 96 clones are popular in Oregon due to a uniform fruit set under cooler bloom conditions, higher number of moderate to large berries however with more flavor-concentrated clusters.
