These are excellent choices for specimen trees for yards and parks and have some of the best branching patterns and leaves for shade trees. These rapid-growth trees grow at a rate of 2+ft per year to reach to 40 to 60+ ft heights and start producing an abundance of acorns in anywhere from 15 to 20 years when grown from seed alone or as soon as 5 years when crafted with scions from older acorn producing trees (see our other listings in season), depending on a variety of conditions. The willow-leaf shaped leaves produce excellent shade and remain evergreen through much of the year. The acorns are also relatively small compared to many other oaks grown in the southeast, zone 8, where these acorns were harvested. These acorns are a favorite of whitetail deer, goats, squirrels, ducks and turkeys.

Good seed crops are produced nearly every year. Mature trees produce between 9 and 53 liters (0.25 to 1.5 bu) or about 5.2 to 31.3 kg (11.5 to 69 lb) of acorns per year. Since willow oak averages 603 seeds per liter (21.250/bu), the number of seeds per tree ranges from about 5,400 to 31,900 acorns.

Depending on the date that you receive these acorns from us, they should continue be stratified for a total of at least two to three months or longer from October of 2025 (at least until the end of November or December), either by keeping under refrigeration or by planting out in air-pruning beds or other suitable containers or locations with protection from squirrels and other rodents. When planted in warmer conditions outdoors in the spring or sooner in a greenhouse, the stratified acorns, with proper soil, irrigation and sunlight, should sprout and grow well into young trees. We recommend building plant protection enclosures (circular or square 4 x 4 ft or 8 x 8 ft) around the trees when at their final destinations to protect them from being damaged by deer or goats. We ask our customers to report back to us regarding the germination rate accomplished and acquire scions for grafting from us when the root-stock tree is at the appropriate stature.

https://velldonetradellc.com/products/100-sinktested-stratified-willow-oak-quercus-phellos-acorns-for-planting-beautiful-smallacornproducing-trees
